De Cubles serie van Jan Maarten Voskuil (Arnhem 1964) is ontstaan in opdracht van Studio Onvervalst in samenwerking met het ministerie van Justitie en Binnenlandse Zaken. Van iedere vorm zijn er drie verschillende versies, waardoor er feitelijk drie unieke series zijn. Een serie is aangekocht door Collectie Rijsoverheid. De titel Cuble is een samentrekking van kiezel (pebble in het Engels), kubus (cube) en cirkel (circle).
De kiezel is een associatie die tijdens de schetsfase is ontstaan. De vormen lijken op door het water glad gesleten kiezelstenen. Stenen worden vaak door wandelaars gebruikt als herkenningstekens om de weg (terug) te vinden.
De cirkel uit Cuble verwijst naar de gekromde lijnen, die ieder een kwart cirkel dan wel een kwart ellips vormen. Een ellips is ook wel een cirkel die onder een hoek wordt gezien. Een perspectivische cirkel. De Cubles bestaan dus uit verschillende perspectieven van dezelfde vorm; de cirkel. Daarmee zijn ze ook op te vatten als kubistische weergaves van een cirkel. Het kubisme is in de kunst namelijk een stroming waarin de werkelijkheid tegelijkertijd vanuit verschillende perspectieven wordt gezien.
Tenslotte zijn er nog twee elementen in de werken die voor Voskuil kenmerkend zijn; het modulaire karakter en de kleur.
Het gebruik van modules komt voort uit zijn ruimtelijke (3D) schilderijen, waarin hij met modules (bouwstenen), kom tot schilderijen die als architectonische reliëfs aan de muur hangen. Met behulp van bouwtekeningen en geometrische principes worden de werken “uitgerekend”. Door het opspannen ontstaat een glooiend oppervlak dat evenwel onverwacht tactiel en organisch aandoet. De Cubles beogen hetzelfde op het platte vlak.
Het gebruik van verschillende kleurtonen in eenzelfde kleurengamma versterken het idee van verschillende perspectieven. Het biedt tevens een oplossing om onder de dwingende monochromie uit te komen. Monochrome schilderkunst is een rigide eindpunt in de ontwikkeling van de schilderkunst. Voskuils ontsnapping hieraan is het zoeken naar de nuance.

The title "Cuble" is a portmanteau of "pebble," "cube," and "circle." "Pebble" is an association that arose during the sketching phase. The shapes resemble pebbles worn smooth by water. Pebbles are often used by hikers as landmarks to find their way (back). The circle in "Cuble" refers to the curved lines, each forming a quarter circle or a quarter ellipse. An ellipse is also a circle viewed at an angle—a perspectival circle. The Cubles, therefore, consist of different perspectives of the same shape: the circle. The use of modules stems from his three-dimensional (3D) paintings, in which he uses modules (building blocks) to create paintings that hang on the wall like architectural reliefs. Using construction drawings and geometric principles, the works are "calculated." The stretching process creates a undulating surface that nevertheless feels unexpectedly tactile and organic. The Cubles aim for the same effect on the flat surface. The use of different color tones within the same color range reinforces the idea of different perspectives. It also offers a solution to escape the constraining monochromy. Monochrome painting is a rigid endpoint in the development of painting. Voskuil's escape from this is the search for nuance.
